Mayfield is one of Newcastle’s oldest suburbs and is located six kilometres from the central business district. During its development in the 1880s it attracted wealthy Newcastle residents who chose to live in villas on the outskirts of the city. It was also a residential area for workers in the nearby steelworks and other industries. Today it is a thriving cultural hub known for its antique shopping, hipster cafes and private galleries.
